Nvidia said to be quitting chipset business; company denies claims

Nvidia has decided to throw in the towel and quit the chipset business, sources close to the situation at one of Taiwan's top motherboard makers have revealed. As the story is told, Nvidia called a meeting earlier this week with its motherboard partners to gauge support for it continuing to develop chipsets in the future.
The motherboard makers' response? Silence.
However, Nvidia has responded to the news by saying its completely groundless. The company stated that it has no intention of getting out of the chipset business, according to Michael Jong, senior director of corporate marketing for Nvidia APAC.
Jong added that Nvidia is looking forward to bringing new and very exciting MCP products to the market for both AMD and Intel platforms.
The sources claim that Nvidia will probably transfer the chipset team to work on GPU projects. On the motherboard makers' side, some makers have already canceled upcoming high-end motherboard projects based on the nForce 7-series chipset.
The loss of its chipset business would have a significant impact on Nvidia's GPU business in the short-term. Reception to the nForce 200 chip (BR04) which will enable SLI technology on Intel X58 motherboards has been lukewarm at best, with many makers saying they will not bother adding the chip on their boards. This means Nvidia needs to find a way of licensing and enabling multi-GPU support on motherboards using Intel and/or AMD chipsets fast. Otherwise it will have to cede the top-end of the graphics card market to AMD, which now has the benefit of Crossfire.
The news would also debunk any recent speculation that Apple will be adopting Nvidia chipsets for its upcoming notebook products. It would be unfortunate if Apple really has poured water on the close relationship it has built with Intel over the past few years, only to have its new best friend exit the market before products are even announced.

Da quel che ho letto io, prima erano trapelate queste indiscrezione dell'uscita di NVIDIA dal mercato chipset, ma oggi sono state smentite da NVIDIA stessa, la news è possibile leggerla su tom'shw.it...

Ma non sto capendo cosa stia succedendo alle mobo...*poof* : che vuol dire? TUTTE le mobo fanno *poof*?

Ok letto un ulteriore fonte, DFI come Foxconn e GIGABYTE non produrranno le mobo con il 790i SLI...

non solo smetteranno di produrlo.. da quello che ho capito lo hanno proprio tolto da catalogo..
anche EVGA ha provato a "guardarsi attorno"... butta male per Nvidia..

790i chipset issues: NVIDIA and vendors give their views

Foxconn announced today that it was not going to continue with the development of its planned Dreadnought motherboard due to issues with the NVIDIA 790i chipset.
Carl Brunning, the UK technical manager at Foxconn, told HEXUS: “The [790i] chip is not of the quality standard that we needed for the Quantum Force range.”
Quantum Force is Foxconn’s relatively recent entry into the enthusiast motherboard space. It has already released the Mars and Black Ops, with the 780a Destroyer expected soon, having been delayed by a BIOS rewrite, according to Brunning.
The P45 Avenger is apparently still a work in progress, with BIOS debugging being the delaying factor here too, but the 790i Dreadnought has left the building. Brunning confirmed that nobody in the media and certainly no consumers had received any Dreadnoughts.

NVIDIA's response

HEXUS.channel spoke to Ben Berraondo, the UK PR manager for NVIDIA to ask for an NVIDIA perspective on this. “Every company that has already released a 790i board isn’t pulling it,” he said. “You’ll have to talk to Foxconn to get the details of their specific case but I doubt it’s just a chipset issue.”
We then spoke to Rui Pereira, channel sales manager at Gigabyte UK. He said: “If we are going to pull our 790i board I have received no confirmation from HQ. As far as I’m concerned the 790i is still on the roadmap.” He did reveal, however, that back at Computex this year, Gigabyte had encountered compatibility issues between the 790i and some Intel CPUs.
Another motherboard maker we were able to speak to was MSI, in the form of product marketing manager Richard Stewart. “We have a 790i board called the P7N2 Diamond out at the moment and it has no reported issues,”he said.
So this appears to be limited to Foxconn for now. It would be interesting to know whether there are any temperature and overall stability related issues with this chipset. There is no MSI 790i P7N2 Diamond available at retail. It is not at Newegg, Tigerdirect, nor is it listed at MSI's, "where to buy", retailers.

Tempi duri... Devo dire che mi un pò mi dispiace ma il fatto che lo SLI fosse limitato solo alle loro piattaforme gli si rivolta ora decisamente contro. Sotto questo aspetto, ben gli stà.
