Tra le ottiche zoom più popolari di sempre, l'80-400VR è stata anche una di quelle che sono riuscite a vivere più a lungo di altre: oltre dieci anni di onorato servizio e centinaia di migliaia di esemplari venduti rappresentano, nei fatti, un vero record.
La nuova generazione presenta in dote tutto il meglio che Nikon potesse offrire in termini di tecnologia e processi produttivi: design dell'ottica completamente inedito con 20 elementi, di cui 4 ED ed uno Super ED, raccolti in 12 gruppi; trattamento Nano Crystal Coat per il controllo dei riflessi interni; sistema VR di ultima generazione (4 stop di guadagno).
A proposito delle performance in termini di risolvenza, il Produttore ne rimarca un nuovo, superiore livello rispetto alla precedente generazione, sottolineando la maggior incisione su tutto il frame (FX).
Dimensioni e peso aumentano leggermente: parliamo infatti di 203mm di lunghezza contro i precedenti 171 e di 1.570 vs. 1.360 grammi della vecchia edizione (entrambi con paraluce montato).
Oltre alla variazione relativa alla formula ottica, giocano un ruolo importante anche la costruzione, adesso in lega di magnesio, e la tropicalizzazione.
Il prezzo, 2.700USD non è propriamente contenuto ma giustificato da una serie di contenuti di livello superiore.

High-Performance, High-Power Zoom Nikon's newest telephoto zoom lens features a versatile 80-400mm focal length (5x zoom equivalent) that offers photographers a high-power FX-format lensing option to help capture stunning stills and HD video. Whether birding or shooting from the stands, the lens is also compatible with DX-format bodies to extend the maximum reach to 120-600mm (35mm equivalent). Additionally, alongside a 1.4x teleconverter, the lens can be expanded to an f/8 aperture to retain compatibility with the AF system on the most recent Nikon D-SLR cameras.
The AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR is loaded with essential NIKKOR technologies to help ensure top performance for the advanced photographer, including Vibration Reduction (VR) allowing for up to four stops of image stabilization while Auto tripod detection VR allows for effortless stabilization when mounted on a tripod.
