The release of the Radeon HD 4870 X2 has led to Nvidia losing the still precious graphics performance crown but, since the company has grown so attached to the little shiny, sparkly thing, it now wants it back.
The Green Graphics Goblin's plan is to have the highest-performing video card on the market before the end of the year and that might just mean we'll be seeing another dual-GPU 'GX2' card released this autumn.
With just over four months until 2008 becomes history Nvidia doesn't have too many options, especially since, it hasn't been good enough to deserve a miracle. One likely scenario is that Nvidia will pair up two 55nm-built GT200(b) GPUs for a GeForce GTX 260 GX2 that has 384 Processing Cores and higher clocks than the single-GPU GTX 260. If this green monster becomes a reality when the performance crown may move back to Santa Clara but for now it is apparently enjoying redecorating its new home in Sunnyvale.
