We have just told you a bit about ABIT’s plans concerning Intel’s processors, as we got another word from one very reliable though unofficial source on the company’s plans regarding AMD CPUs. Here are some news:
Well, the really long-lasting mainboards, namely KG7 and KG7-RAID (based on AMD-760 chipset), the info about which first appeared last September, should start shipping this month. The mainboards specs have already set our teeth on edge that is why we suggest that we refrain from listing them again here (see our news archive for details). The major difference between KG7 and KG7-RAID from other mainboards based on the same chipset is the presence of 4 DIMM slots for PC1600/PC2100 DDR SDRAM, while all the other solutions have 2 at the most.
KR7 and KR7-RAID mainboards based on VIA KT266 chipset should begin in August. The boards are designed in ATX form-factor, support 200/266MHz system bus and again feature 4 DIMM slots for PC1600/PC2100 DDR SDRAM (max 4GB). Besides, there are 6 PCI and 1 AGP 4x slot. The North and South (VT8233) bridges of the chipset are connected by V-Link bus. Of course, the RAID version features an integrated HighPoint ATA/100 IDE RAID controller. The boards support ABIT’s brand SoftMenu III technology. To tell the truth, we are interested mostly in one single thing: will VIA use the new revision of the chipset North Bridge (which should boast much higher performance), or not?
NV7 mainboard based on nForce420 chipset should also start shipping in August. The specs haven’t been mentioned, but they seem pretty easy to guess: ATX form-factor (the MicroATX mainboard based on this chipset will be called NV22 and will be supplied only to the OEM market), 200/266MHz system bus, 3 DIMM slots for PC1600/PC2100 DDR SDRAM (in case of 1 or 3 modules used it is 64bit, in case of 2 – there are 2 banks 64bit each, which makes 128bit), 5 (6) PCI slots, 1 AGP 4x slot, integrated GeForce2 MX graphics core, AC’97 sound (maybe also DolbyDigital support, but we doubt it really), SoftMenu III, etc. We also believe there may appear some NV7-RAID mainboard as well, equipped with an integrated ATA/100 RAID controller from High-Point.
KS7 mainboard on a potentially very popular SiS735 chipset, is also due in August. The curious thing about it is the fact that it was initially planned to be released only in Q4 (SiS was going to double its production capacities by that time compared to the beginning of 2001). Does it mean that the situation for SiS has finally changed for the better? Hopefully. The detailed specs of the board weren’t mentioned, but they are again pretty easy to guess: ATX form-factor, 3 PC1600/PC2100 DIMM slots, 5(6) PCI slots, 1 AGP 4x slot, 1 AMR slot, ATA/100 support, SoftMenu III. We don’t doubt that there will certainly be a KS7-RAID solution with an obvious ATA/100 RAID controller from HighPoint.
